Answers to various questions
Hello everyone,
To help me keep my thoughts focused into one main status area, I've created a little mini-journal to give me a spot to drop quick status updates about what I'm up to.
Even though I've been a bit slower to respond, please feel free to continue to send me questions and comments as usual!
As a general update, here's some wiki stuff that may be of interest to you!
- Image Contributions
- I'm still working on renders when I have spare time! If there are any that require my attention as soon as possible, please don't hesitate to point them out to me on this talk page. For the rest, I'll keep chugging along.
- Other Projects
- I've had to bump a few of my projects onto my main projects page. I haven't forgotten about any of them, but I've had to shift priorities a bit for some of the bigger ones. If there is anything that you guys really need pulled from that list, just let me know. I'll continue chipping at this stuff as I have free time.
- Bugs and Questions
- We've managed to net Mike and his team for the wiki, so if you have bugs to report, he's your man!
- Trivia
- As always, if you guys have questions about trivia references, don't be scared to ask me to confirm or deny them. We know you guys put a lot of thought into figuring out the obscurities, so we don't mind helping out if you get stuck.
- It's been a bit tougher to get trivia answers lately because all teams are really heavily focused on GW2 (mine included). I send regular emails to the team containing questions, and I still try to follow-up on the requests that you all have, but sometimes response times are a little slower than they used to be. I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not ignoring any questions, and I will keep asking folks periodically until I get responses. Thanks for understanding :)

[edit] Better late than never
I thought I should give you a heads up that we have changed the guild page policy to include a requirement of an English language summary on all foreign language pages. I know you have posted about allowing foreign language guild pages in the past, but from reading over those old posts what I saw was more of a concern for the way people were commenting on them rather than the actual need to have at least the basic information available to the entire community in English. We all realize that this is the wiki that the game links connect to, and therefore we need to allow the global presence which includes native languages, however, enforcing content on a page only a fraction of the community can read is difficult. I plan to monitor the guild namespace fairly closely and will do my best to see that all warnings or notices are done respectfully. We are also establishing a translation project to assist in getting the English summaries done on existing guild pages. I hope these changes will meet with your approval, and please feel free to speak up if you see any problems.-- Wyn 03:28, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up, Wyn. I've brought up the topic of looking into the details of creating multi-language wikis to our community folks in the past, so I'll make a note to send a follow-up email about it on Monday. Are there many guild pages that are not English (I assume so if this was made policy)? If so, are there specific languages that you're seeing a large influx of content from? --
Emily Diehl (talk) 03:34, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Well, we are working our way through the alphabet atm, but I see a lot of Russian, German, Dutch, and French pages. The tags are placing the pages into Category:Translation needed so if you wish to monitor the numbers as we get the tagging done, feel free.--
Wyn 03:41, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Very cool! Having this hard data in-hand will really help us figure out the best thing to do for other languages. Thanks for doing this tagging. --
Emily Diehl (talk) 03:45, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- I was also thinking that if you need some numbers, we can also easily do DPL lists using the language variable in the guild infobox. It would give you much more accurate numbers of what languages are being used, since the tags we are currently placing are only for the purpose of getting translations on pages that are done completely in foreign languages, and will be removed as the translations are done. I believe the DPL lists could be done whenever you wish.--

[edit] Wallpapers on website
Hi, I was wondering if you could open up the directory http://www.guildwars.com/images/wallpaper/ or even http://www.guildwars.com/images/ on the website. (Just post a index.php there that makes a list of all jpg in the folder). Pretty please? (Qanar | talk) 17:17, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- Er...Elaborating a bit, we have noticed that the wallpapers section on the American website has changed a bit. Now each game has its own wallpaper page, featuring at most nine images (the Factions one, for example). The thing is, there used to be far more wallpapers than nine for each game; and while the American website apparently does not have those wallpapers anymore, we can still find them in the other Guild Wars official websites (103 at the European website, for example, some different ones on the site from Taiwan, etc). We know you guys are working on the website and that you specifically are very very busy, but is there any chance that those wallpapers could be seen again on the American site? Erasculio 17:22, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- /\ /\ What he said (Qanar | talk) 17:36, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- I would like to see this happen as well –
Barinthus 20:08, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- Heya guys! We're looking into a solution that will index all papers, and we're also planning on eventually getting all of our past papers up for download. I have a feeling that this will be one of my side projects (so I don't sidetrack the efforts of our already crunched designers). I can't promise any exact times on when it will be done, but I promise I'll check into it sometime this week. --
Emily Diehl (talk) 18:00, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- Awesome! Thank you very much! 87.65.72.213 18:52, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- Emily, you must have the Superior Rune of Awesome affixed somewhere on your person - thanks! –
Barinthus 19:58, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, Emily : ) And congratulations for your new position : D Erasculio 21:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
on that same note Emily is it possible that you can get some of the loading screen art? i particularly like the vabbi loading screen and a few others that were never made into wallpapers. i am of coarse talking about the loading screens with what looks to be concept art not the loading screens with screen shots (those just look bad imo)75.165.117.51 18:45, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- also i want the spear that the para is holding in the february wallpaper on the taiwan page *crys* http://www.guildwars.in.th/static/download/wallpaper/FEBRUARY1600x1200.jpg75.165.117.51 18:51, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- Just a note: if one day you are at work without anything to do, with everything in the wiki and on the website completely fixed and finished, all possible content up on both sites, the little fishes in the aquarium already happily fed and etc (in other words, never xD), any chance you could find out for us if we could ever get the Guild Wars cartoons from the Korean site on the American site, like this one? Given how that's likely not possible, any chance we could one day get a transcript or something along these lines for those? I have no idea how these things work, but if the Korean website had to ask the main Arena Net company permission for the content in those videos, maybe there's an easy way to access those transcripts and hopefully one day make them available...? Erasculio 01:39, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hiya guys! I'm working on the wallpaper stuff right now, but it's taking longer than I'd predicted. Erasculio, I can check into the cartoon question. I don't know where that came from, so I'll have to do some investigation. While we don't really have the video resources to subtitle anything, it's slightly possible that I may be able to wrangle favors from coworkers or friends to get a transcript or something. No promises, but I'll look into it for ya. --

[edit] Animations
Hi Emily, do you remember this topic, in which we asked you to see if there was anything you guys could do about our (very large) animation files? We have found ways to work around that problem, so it isn't an issue anymore. No need to worry about that subject again, so I guess you could archive it : ) Erasculio 18:30, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- Awesome! Thanks for the heads up :) --
Emily Diehl (talk) 20:24, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- Eh, not to burst the awesome bubble, but a few animations I have (some of the Ranger spirits) come out to over 2 MB, the largest being 2.75 MB. If it's too much of a hassle to fix this, that's fine, but it'd be great if you could raise the cap to 2.75 MB somehow. calor (talk) 22:53, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
- Would you like me to edit the images so they have a smaller size? I couldn't find a way to edit the really large images (the 4.00 mb ones), but the ones with less than 3.00 mb may be edited without loss in quality. Erasculio 11:36, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- It's only a few, and I've managed to crop them down, trim off a few beginning and end slides, etc. to get them down to size. It'd be nice to upload them without having to cut them down in any way, but it's nothing big. Thanks for the offer, Erasculio, but I can do it myself :) calor (talk) 01:36, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
(Reset indent) Hi guys! I'll check on this upload limit increase request, but this is one of those slippery slope topics where some kind of a reasonable limit has to be set. I'll let you know what I find out. -- Emily Diehl (talk) 03:18, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- Perhaps then, a permanent change isn't necessary. Changing the limit size for a set amount of time would allow people to upload the files and then when it's all said and done, the limit can be reset at whatever it needs to be. I am assuming of course that the size restrictions only apply to uploading said animations and not to hosting them. Anyways, my idea might be of some use. :)
Drago 10:37, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- Can there be a special change that allows particular users (those on the project) to upload more than 2Mb under the animation heading? --
Antioch 17:36, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Is the name of this quest by any chance a reference to the Merry Melodies cartoon "What's Opera, Doc?" featuring Elmer Fudd's Spear and Magic Helmet? Thanks! 99.142.29.199 00:49, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Any update
on the trivia questions in the holding tank? It's been two months since you sent the questions out... Cress Arvein 19:43, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, no :( I'll send them over to Linsey and the rest of the team again. Right now, things are extremely busy around the studio, so everyone's budgeting their time pretty tightly. I'm sorry for the delay, but unfortunately there's not much more I can do. I'll see if I can send one question at a time so they are a bit more digestible for folks. Thanks for understanding! --

Hey Emily, we would like to add some reference to our copyrighted content policy to Guild Wars Wiki:Copyrights, as it is frequently confused with the policy and people started complaining that there is no information about copyrighted content there. Would you be able to somehow include a link to the policy nicely? Maybe something like "under the licensing terms of this site in consideration of our copyrighted content policy." at the end. Thank you. poke | talk 01:36, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Hi Emily, before we start another revert war, could you check for if this is a reference to anything and if so to what? Thanks a lot! ~ Kurd 09:37, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Heart in Pre-Searing
I am fairly sure that you already addressed this but I was unable to find it in your archives. I was trying to remember the story behind this heart in Ashford area in the pre-searing. Could you elaborate? I hope to create a section on it so people don't have to ask you about it - there's nothing on it on the Ashford page. – Barinthus 08:27, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
- what's the wording? DD . SS ? (Terra Xin 02:15, 18 April 2009 (UTC))
- Apparently. I vaguelly recall that one of graphic developers for the game used that to propose to his gf or something. Was hoping that Emily could share some details. I'm sure she has a lot on her plate right :) –
Barinthus 08:44, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think you are right Barinthus, I recall that a couple devs went through GW's first online wedding on like the opening day of GW, there should be an early article that talked about this. Although, I'm not sure if this heart is related at all... (Satanael 04:06, 20 April 2009 (UTC))
[edit] Any way you can get the images for the Common Gloves?
The Images for the Common gloves(chaos, stone, glacier, destroyer, dragon, etc) seem to be flooded with people showing off the rest of their armor instead of these gloves. Some of the Images don't fit the same size of each other(Male and female pictures different sizes.) Is there any way you can get the pictures for these items uploaded showing off the gloves, and not someones 15k armor? 24.233.254.51 07:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
- Heya anonymous! I am pretty sure I did upload renders for at least one of the gloves, but I can double check and add the rest. --

[edit] renders
Hi Emily, got a special request, obviously getting a lot of traffic for nicholas because of the gifts and stuff, was hoping we could get renders for File:Nicholas.jpg as it is the same model for the traveller and Sandford as well as professor Yakington :) if you have time of course. --Lemming 18:08, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Umm... Doesn't the Traveler have gray hear, unlike the Huntsman? (thus 2 models) — Poki#3
19:15, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- I think Poki is correct. Yakkington hasn't changed, though, I don't think.
Rose Of Kali 19:49, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Poki is correct, although it's just a different skin, same model. DarkNecrid 22:44, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ah ok, I just looked at his clothes that looked the same. --Lemming
22:46, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hi guys! Yeah there are two different skins for Nicholas - his younger pre-searing self, and his slightly older post-searing self. Yakk stays the same. I can get renders of both Nicks, but the Yakkington may be a little tricky. He has model issues in my render tool, so I'll have to ask the artists about them before I can get a good shot of him for the site. I will follow up on that this week :) --
Emily Diehl (talk) 19:57, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
(Reset indent) Talking about renders... (sorry, too lazy to start my own request at the bottom of the page) Would it be possible (if time allows) to get one for Jingle Bear? Seems to be the only animal companion missing a render... KTNXBAI! ^_^ --NIN37 22:36, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
[edit] A little help for me, and a little notice to you ^-^
Hi there,
I've been wondering if you could help me with a problem that's been pestering me for a few days : I uploaded updated faces pictures for my characters on my user page, but for some reason, the old ones keep on popping up. (That is until I refresh the page like 10 times). Is there any way I can address this issue? Should I simply ask to mark the older ones for deletion (could be a nuisance if I always need to bother someone to delete them each time I upload an update...).
And as a side note, the link sending us to Madame's profile is "http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=User:Emily_DiehlMadame", instead of "http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=User:Emily_Diehl/Madame" (Missing /). ^-^
(I admit, I only saw it cause I'm always checking your page to see if there's a good idea to make my page look better... I'm a thief that way xD).
Meredy Redleaf 15:00, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- I fixed the link on Madame. Meredy, try purging your browser cache (Ctrl+F5) and see if that fixes them. Otherwise, post the links to the images that are still a problem. Part of the problem is you are uploading new versions too quickly, it often takes over an hour for the image cache to clear and reuploading them every 2 minutes just makes the problem worse. --
Wyn 15:27, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, however, the change was made Friday, and the problem is happening now (on Monday).
I tried purging the server cache, my own Internet temp files folder; I even tried to switch to an other Pc (both home and at work).
The problem is still there.
Meredy Redleaf 15:45, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I am seeing the new ones in all instances, so that tells me it's not a wiki image cache problem. --
Wyn 15:59, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hiya Meredy! Thanks for the report (and nice job on your user page :)). I hit your character page, and the images do appear to be updated for me. Are you still having the same problem? I think that Wyn is right about the local caching, because the same thing was happening to me with my bullets. I actually even deleted my old ones from the wiki, and still saw them occasionally several days later. I'm starting to wonder if there's a per-user caching setting somewhere in MediaWiki that we're overlooking, since this happens so frequently. I will chat with the team about it and see what they think. Anyways, thanks again for the report! --
Emily Diehl (talk) 16:41, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Was that NPC named after Morty from Bring Back The Rifts [Rift]? Also, small reminder of the trivia bit I inquired about last july on Ensign Lumi. If you're feeling really bored, you could keep an eye on Category:NPCs named after community members and make sure we aren't listing false references. There are a number of unconfirmed spearmen references, but a few are pretty obvious and the rest fit because of the spearmen theme, so I just added em all. If any are wrong, feel free to tell me and I'll remove them from the list. Thanks :) -Auron 03:28, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- Sure! I'll keep and eye on this and point other folks to it too. You should add Emryd to the list :) Lins named her after me! --

[edit] Just Reporting Broken Links
This is the first time I've written anything for the the Website Producer, but I didn't know where else to go with this. I was going to the EU Guild Wars site downloading wallpapers because that's the only site with an archive of all the wallpapers the Guild Wars team ever put up. There are a few with either incorrect links or their wallpapers have been somehow erroneously removed from the site. I've provided the links below:
- http://eu.guildwars.com/gallery/view-wallpaper/137/
- http://eu.guildwars.com/gallery/view-wallpaper/186/
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask a quick question as well, but is there any reason why this wealth of beautiful art was removed from the US site and whether they will ever be available again? Guild Wars was the panacea for my wallpaper needs thanks to you guys being the only ones around who did widescreen ones long before anyone else did. 72.130.183.68 05:40, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- Just fyi, all three work fine for me. It's the Paragon (omg I want that shield...), the Kaineng Slums, and Devona. Dig around, I remember seeing a thread about the wallpapers already somewhere around here, Emily was going to look into that.
Rose Of Kali 17:42, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the report, IP! I see that you're talking about the widescreen versions of those papers, so I'll look into the issue. --

- Looking forward to those wallpapers, Emile! If anyone else is using the Windows 7 RC, the Themes feature allow a slideshow of wallpapers on your desktop. Great work! Thanks very much. :D
Btw, did you notice the Mists Chest you uploaded has two locks that are apparently not seen ingame? Take a look at the upload history from the Obsidian Chest for example. —Zerpha The Improver 22:27, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ranking the stars
Hija Emily,
First off all, well done with the refurnishing of the Xunlai. A small request, with probably lot's of programming, or maybe not. When adding the prediction the teams are sorted by the qualifying points. Is it possible to change that to sorting by the Hero Battle Ladder rank/guild ladder rank? - Thanks Didis! As I mentioned in an earlier reply to a Xunlai suggestion, the goal for this past revamp was primarily security and cleaning up the overall experience. It's not to say we're never going to add additional features to the site, but at this moment, we don't have plans to tweak anything else. --

[edit] New Copyright Wording
Hey Emily, I just wanted to follow-up on this. Any update on the new wording? I left a message on Mike's page as well, but I just wanted to make sure you saw it. Any update would be hugely appreciated. (Satanael 18:16, 26 May 2009 (UTC))
- Hiya Satanael! Unfortunately, I don't have anything yet. As Mike mentioned on his page, we're just coming down from a major review milestone, so our focus has been on that for some time. Since that's past (and the holiday weekend is over), I will track this down and see where we're at with it right now. --
Emily Diehl (talk) 18:20, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- That's perfect, thanks Emily! (Satanael 18:22, 26 May 2009 (UTC))
- Heya again Satanael! I just wanted to post here too to let you know that I've answered the timing question on Mike's page. From what I've been told, it looks like the new terms will be ready in about a week. After that, we'll post them, give it a few days, and then push the changes live. So, (unless something unexpected pops up), this should all be ready to rock in the next few weeks! --

[edit] The new suggestion namespace
As per the end of this discussion (I know I'm a bit of a jerk, you don't need to mention it ;), would you care to comment on how it might be useful for the suggestion namespace to be organised? I'm asking you because I saw you active recently and you were involved in the discussion on Mike's page and a similar comment there drew no response. We could beat our head against a wall for weeks trying to figure out what we think the best way of categorising things is and implementing and enforcing the system, but it could all end up being useless if we don't get some input from Anet about how you guys would like it organised. Misery 18:16, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, ultimately I agree with Misery, some input from you guys would help a lot. (Satanael 18:19, 26 May 2009 (UTC))

[edit] XTH issues
Hi, I am having issues in the new XTH (IE 8 and Firefox), especially in 1v1 were le list of participants is quite long. Sometimes participant names get overlap ontop of each other, sometimes the top qualified (people with over 100 qp) are missing from the list, other times my bet are not saved at all, and sometimes I get disconnected while trying to save my bet... Jaxom 08:14, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- I use IE8 and Firefox never saw this problem.
Rose Of Kali 18:13, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- CS Element is Back (April 3rd finalis) is not showing in this IE listing but is showing this FF listing (needless to it's not been added to my listing on the view where it is missing). My FF listing include as well Viet Mangeur De Nem (April's 2nd, QP 36) and Peach Ftww (April's 5th, QP25) both whom do not show up in my IE.
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/2980/xth1.jpg
- Overlap occurs when removing names from the list by dopping them out the list (and not on the candidate list).

- When put in my selection list, people and guild QP do not get updated anymore.

Bravo! I liked the featured article part and especially the part where it shows updates re: Z-Challenges and Nicholas' activities. Please do pass the word on to the relevant person or persons that at least one fan out there appreciate it. :) – Barinthus 12:07, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- That person would be Why and the wiki community. Anet staff have very little input (beyond that of every user) on the actual organization of the wiki itself, so any changes you ever see to that format will normally be attributable to your fellow users. -- Salome

- Most of the conversation about what to do with the page happens on Talk:Main Page/editcopy, and you can see a possible 'beta' of new changes on Main Page/editcopy if people are working on it. Hi ! I try during many hours to make my prediction but it's totally impossible : white page, errors etc... The server is overload... Isn't the first prediction. You know how many people come to make his prediction so why is so overload ? --Clius 06:48, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Its absolutely fine here, so it must have been the last minute voters. Dominator Matrix 21:44, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- A lot people on the german Wartower also yelled about this. The issue was only there for the time before the GvG voting. Now (and on Friday) everything worked fine. Given that a lot guilds only get enough qualification points very late, I and many others tend to vote quite late, usually some hours before the deadline. But that didn't work today; the problems were similar to when the wiki is full of users (remember those big updates?) such as that I get the xth.php as a download instead and such things. So it's really likely that the servers were not able to handle it (maybe because of the high security on the server side, the current servers are not enough to hold the mass of visitors). poke | talk 00:56, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks again for these reports, guys. I just wanted to let you all know I've passed the feedback along and that we're looking into what's causing these issues. --

[edit] Writer position
Just a quick question, Emily: The writing position for the website... does the applicant have to live in the US?-- Large 23:20, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

- Heya Large! Yeah, we're looking for someone to come in-house. I've worked with remote contractors before in a writing capacity, and it ends up being really difficult to effectively communicate...especially when the big updates roll around. Lupen 22:56, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
- Well, thanks, but you see, obtaining a tourist visa for the US, being born here is hard; let's not talk about a work visa.--
Large 22:59, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, unfortunately the work visa thing can be a huge problem for a lot of people. I guess there are a limited number of them granted per year throughout the entire country, so those are divvied up among companies in a way that I don't understand. I think it's simpler to get them for people that already work for the company (like in Martin's case), but applying for a new one seems to be tough. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the process other than it's difficult :( --
Emily Diehl (talk) 00:32, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- Getting a tourist visa is not the end of the world. I have a Vietnamese gf and she has to get a tourist visa everytime she comes over here. It stinks, especially the first time through, and there's a lot of paperwork, but basically if you can provide a good reason for why they can be sure you will go back when the visa is over (e.g., I have a job that I like and they expect me to return, or I am still in school and have to return to class in order to graduate, etc.) then you should not have a problem, unless you are from a country with international terrorists (like Saudi Arabia or Serbia), then all bets are off. But from what I understand, it is a lot easier to get a work visa if you are already in the US and a company hires you, so it may be possible to get a 1 or 3 month tourist visa, come over for the interview, get hired, and then apply for your work visa and stand a pretty good chance of getting it before too long. (Satanael 05:21, 9 June 2009 (UTC))
(Resetting indent) Yeah, that's kinda the situation. I'm from Colombia, and since the country is, sadly, most knwon because of the drug problems, we're not so lucky on getting the visa.-- Large 05:26, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's tough. I don't know exactly what it is like in Colombia, but I had some friends in Vietnam that worked for the US Consulate on visa applications, and they told me that because the US has no way of tracking foreign nationals once they are inside the US, the policy position they have to take is to assume that everyone who gets a visa of any kind, whether tourist or otherwise, is going to stay forever. In other words, the US does not have the ability or desire to track down every tourist visa and make sure they will leave when the visa runs out, so they have to assume they won't. It's not like China or Vietnam or some place like that where a foreign national needs to register their passport with the local police in every place they spend the night, whether that be their own apartment, a hotel, or even just to crash at a friend's house for the night. In that way, if your visa runs out, the local police know and won't let you go anywhere until you either renew or leave the country, and leaving the country with an expired visa imparts a fine. Freedom has its cost, but it's often not Americans that pay for it. (Satanael 18:11, 9 June 2009 (UTC))
- I would also like to add that even being in the US doesn't give you much advantage in obtaining a work visa over someone who is outside, if both already have a position lined up. I was considering getting one, and did a lot of research. In 2009, the number of alotted work visas for 2009 was exhausted in the third week of January... And there is about a 2 year waitlist currently. So I don't know how your dear employee was so successful, my guess is that he did not get a work visa, but an "O" visa instead (foreign national of extraordinary ability). All things considered, I don't think he would have had any problems getting one. There might also be a loophole for international companies who transfer their employees from one country to another.

Hi Emily, I just wanted to thank you more directly for your comments here. I chimed in with Misery above because I thought it would be worth a shot, but really didn't expect you or any other dev to comment on those discussions at all, since I know you guys prefer to let us organize the wiki our own way. I was hoping that we might at best get a couple of one-liners here and there or maybe even a paragraph on a particularly scaly issue, but you have gone above and beyond on this one and we all really appreciate it. I think your comments will prove pretty invaluable, and hopefully should motivate more people to engage in the discussion more directly. Thank you again. (Satanael 04:10, 11 June 2009 (UTC))

[edit] Skill icons
Oh hi. I'm Jette, resident wiki troll and malcontent. When I'm not busy stirring up dissent between Gaile and Shard, I also work on making high-resolution skill icon mods via TexMod. I got most of the icons from the skill card package released some time ago, and others with google image search, but there are a lot of icons still missing -- Shield Guardian and Protective Spirit to name a few of the main skills. Aside from those, I'm also missing all of the PvE-only skills, all monster skills, and the generic Monster Skill icon (the angry face). There are probably others I've forgotten as well. I was wonder if you, or anyone else on the team, would be able to release those icons in their high-resolution form, as you did with the majority of them earlier? I could provide you a list of the ones I need, if it would help. If you want an example of my "work (lol)," the TPF for the elementalist icons (pretty much finished) is here, along with a mod I made to clean up the interface a little (very small mod, about 50kb) here. --Jette 10:25, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

- I don't see why it wouldnt be.
Drogo Boffin 22:41, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- The original Confederate battle cry would seem far more likely to me - otherwise we're walking down the road of referenced references again, considering Billy's 5 minutes of fame was a reference to said battle cry. --snograt

- Agreed with Snograt, well said. They're both battle cries, that should be a "duh."

- Unfortunately, it's not so obvious, which is why we have to ask to find out. Smooth Criminal could be a reference to confidence men in general, but we all know it's a song reference. There's no reason that Rebel Yell couldn't be the same. ~ Mortimer 19:02, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] ArbComm
Hi Emily. There's currently an open ArbComm regarding User:Shard regarding his disruption in particular of Gaile's talk pages. One of the proposed rulings involve him no longer being allowed to post on Anet employees' talk pages. He has asked, if that ruling does go into effect, if he can ask you and Linsey for exemptions so that he can post on your talk pages. I'd appreciate if you could comment on Guild Wars Wiki talk:Arbitration committee/2009-06-21-User:Shard whether that's something you'd want to give your permission for. You can also review the particulars of the situation on that page and its associated non-talk page. Thanks. - Tanetris 04:44, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- Heya Tanetris! I don't have any issues with Shard. He's always been respectful on my page, so I personally don't mind if he posts here. The final decision on all of this resides with you admins, though, so handle the situation how you see fit. I prefer to remain completely neutral with ArbComm cases (and anything that should be handled by the governing admin body), so I'll keep this response here and not put it on that page.
- My personal stance on this overall topic (in case it ever comes up again) is that everyone is welcome to post on my talk as long as they're respectful. I respect and appreciate all of you, so I expect that you'll return the favor enough to not give me extra headaches by being dorks on my talk space. As you can tell, I'm not a huge fan of having to archive bunches of stuff. ;) --

- Understood. Thanks much for the response! - Tanetris 00:26, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Elite Canthan images
The images in the Gallery of female assassin Elite Canthan armor are all teeny in comparison to the other armor sets. Other images are 510x900, the Elite Canthan images are 272x480. Do you have this on a to-do list to fix, or had you missed that? (note, I'm not referring to the missing images, I presume the "Image needed" category is enough of an indicator for that) Thanks for your time. --Nkuvu 16:43, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's only the first one, File:Assassin Elite Canthan armor f dyed front.jpg, that's 272x480; the other three on that page are 510x900. --

- Oh lame! I'm not sure why this is small. It was probably one of the first renders I did for the site (when I was still figuring out the best way to do things). I'll replace it tomorrow when I get a spare moment. Thanks for the heads up, Nkuvu :) --

[edit] FeedBack involvement
First of all my apologies for bringing this up here but I do not know of a better place to ask this...
Could you offer any means of assurance that the new Namespace (for Feedback) will maintain enough Developer involvement to always move forward? Before answering, I'd also need to point out that your job; with respect, is content & marketing which means it's sometimes difficult to tell the difference between a 99% confident answer, and a "biz" answer. I ask because I see growing concern about the Dev Talk pages being moved there too and certain individuals' intentions with respect to "enforcement" there. What concerns me is the appearance that you're stepping away from shaping that policy (and possibly all of Anet stepping away from shaping that policy) just as the new namespace is being set up. Do you worry this could be a mistake?
- Has there been considerations about what will happen if staff presence remains secluded to their own talk pages?, and if no "we read this"-style indicators are given in the Userspace sections where we can assume ALL feedback is supposed to reside??(per current negotiations) I don't wish to impose any opinion about how the staff should conduct themselves, but I do feel the need to point the following out: If a "Carrot & Stick" approach isn't utilized, and that staff presence is only felt on their own Talk Pages rather than the proper Feedback userspaces, then we really will face the scenarios predicted by those certain individuals who are clamoring for TOUGH enforcement. So can you offer us some assurance that 'Dev' presence will be routinely felt where the 'Carrot' belongs, and less felt where the 'Stick' should be used? --ilr

- I don't believe anyone, least of all Emily can guarantee developer involvement in the Feedback namespace. I can tell you I have had in depth conversations with Regina, Linsey and Gaile regarding these issues and they have all assured me of the spirit of cooperation among the staff regarding some of the questions that have been raised regarding this. I don't believe you are going to see, or should expect a HUGE increase in developer participation on the wiki, since the wiki will remain something they do on their own time outside of work. As always, it will be up to the wiki community to 'police' the feedback pages, as well as the staff pages, but they are all looking at new posting rules for their pages, that will strongly recommend that users post their issues in the most appropriate places (Skill feedback/Suggestions/Bug reports etc.) and as has been mentioned in our discussion on the restructuring page, users who abuse staff pages with these items will face warnings and bans. Also, Emily (and all other Anet staff) has no more say in shaping policy here than any other user in this community. -- Wyn

- Glad you're showing interest in this. ...now would you believe me if I said the answer I'm actually looking for is a "I dunno" at best, and a "probably not" at worst? My real interest here is actually in a possible automated process, since I know your comrades on the Taskforce are such big fans of Automation... --ilr
05:45, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- Heya ilr! I can't make concrete promises for anyone else, but I can assure you that when the space is set up properly, I will personally make SURE that everyone in the company knows that it exists and knows exactly how to access the space to check things out. I know for a fact that some people will definitely look at feedback on the pages. I've had people asking me when it will be done for quite some time, so there's interest :)
- I don't think it's reasonable or fair to expect any developer to feel obligated to flag anything they've read. Team members should be able to use the space as they see fit, and the community should understand that not commenting doesn't necessarily equal not reading. Most of the wiki work is done on people's free time (case in point, it's 11:25 PM and I'm at my desk responding to this =p). If a dev member chooses to respond to something, that should be their choice.
- I also don't think the talk page versus feedback page thing will be a huge issue. There are a lot of people in the company that are interested in reading feedback, but don't necessarily have the time to maintain a talk presence on the wiki. While some people (like Lins) may end up responding to suggestions posted across a mix of pages, it's reasonable to assume that this won't be the case for most people. I suppose that this may fall under your concern that responses may fall closer to the "stick" (user talk) than the "carrot" (feedback talk), but I can't really predict whether there will be more responses to feedback on talk pages or on feedback talk pages. I think we'll probably just have to set things up and see how it goes. I'm sure that adjustments to rules and guidelines will need to be made, but that's to be expected with anything new :)
- Hope this answers things a little bit. If I misunderstood, let me know. My brain's fuzzy right now =P --

- I'm personally glad there's interest. I look forward to this all being set up ^_^ ~~000.00.00.00~~ 06:45, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- >Hope this answers things a little bit. ...And then some! This was more than ample, Thanks (hopefully it convinces everyone else, you had me at hello) --ilr

- And just to clarify, dev talkpages are going to be moved into the feedback space automatically when we go live with it, so any feedback on those pages will be usable by ANet just like the feedback left on the other spaces in the feedback namespace. (Satanael 14:55, 1 July 2009 (UTC))
I assume you mean any Feedback which is not a Suggestion, since any suggestions added before the switch were not submitted under new licensing... If Wyn gets too busy, she really should let one of us know so we can tag&bag any last-minute midnight additions that make it onto those pages before the switch deadline (once it's announced) --ilr 23:10, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
- As I have said on the restructuring page, no content is going to be moved into the new space. It will be moved to a temp archive so that the staff can finish answering it, then it will be archived into Userspace. All new content will go directly into the feedback namespace, and eventually be archived there as well. -- Wyn
talk 00:36, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- Exactly, an I was referring above to post-switch feedback, so it would include all feedback, including suggestions. (Satanael 01:19, 2 July 2009 (UTC))
- Okay, I didn't think he worded it quite right either... --ilr

[edit] Make GWW FavIcon transparent?
Hi Emily! Is it possible to make the GWW FavIcon transparent again? I remember we had a time it was but somehow it changed. With the release of Firefox 3.5 I stumbled across Robert Accettura's blog and thought I can ask you. :) BigBlue talk 08:27, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dragon Festival
Hey hey Emily, I'm sorry if this is an intrusive question and if it is please ignore it. Just wondering however. why the website hasn't been updated to reflect the upcoming dragon festival? Normally it happens about a week before the event and currently it's just over six hours til the start of the event and yet still no update on the website. Just wondering if this is a change in anet's focus away from documenting the ingame events to focus on other projects or if it's just that you are all swamped with work and haven't been able to get to it yet? Honestly not trying to be a pest here, just wondering. Kind regards -- -- Salome 13:22, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
- It was launched on time, for no/little reason. http://www.guildwars.com/events/ingame/dragon_festival/ Dominator Matrix 02:13, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
- True but still about a week later than normal. However the fact it was launched on the website at all answers my question, they must just have been a bit swamped with stuff. -- Salome
