The things I look for in a skill:

  • Does it have a duel purpose?
    • Vampiric gaze both heals and does damage.
    • Faintheartedness causes dgen and reduces attack speed which in effect reduces damage taken.
  • Does it compliment another skill either you or an ally has?
    • Xinrae's Weapon and Vengeful Weapon, unlike RoF or RoD, can be used effectivly with damage reducing skills like SY! and they both heal and cause damage.
    • Spiteful Spirit and Reckless Haste synergize perfectly. SS triggers even if foe doesnt hit with an attack which reckless haste does cause. Reckless Haste speeds up a foes attack rate which causes SS to do more dmg.
  • Is it an instant action skill or does it take time to fullfill its effect? If so does it do enough to justify its use? Is it spammable to spread? Is it cheap enough to spam?
    • Life Siphon is a low dgen skill thats spammable and gives a very nice reward for doing so with a moderate duration.
    • Meteor Shower has a 60 second recharge but the 9 second duration coupled with its effect are more then enough to justify that and its high energy cost and slow cast.

I sorta wish the only skills in game were the ones released with prophecies. So much clutter now-a-days and every time they over-buff an un-used skill a month later they need to buff its counters. Slowly but surely the game is starting to look more like diablo2 with silly crazy high dmg countered with silly large healing. The only thing that hasnt changed is how much base health a person has which compounds the problem with silly fast killing countered by silly large healing/protection.

Monk vs Ritualist Skills Why do ritualist have protection/healing/smiting rolled into one line?

I could go on by comparing all the blinding/insta save your ass skills with the shadow arts line or all the bodyblocking spirits that benefit ONLY allies to all the rangers'. Or even the non-removable buffs (Item Spells/Weapon Spells) to warrior signets/stances, ranger stances and paragon chants/echos/shouts.
