The basic currency in Guild Wars is gold; 1,000 Gold (gold) equals 1 Platinum (platinum, often called plat, p, or k). A player can hold up to 100 Platinum in their inventory, so players often use expensive items such as Zaishen Keys, Globs of Ectoplasm, and Rubies in trades worth more than 100 Platinum. A Vault box can hold an extra 1,000 Platinum.

[edit] Acquisition

There are many ways to get currency. The most common way is picking up drops (gold or items) from defeated enemies; doing this repetitively is called farming. Merchants and traders pay gold to buy any item a player can sell. Many quests and missions give currency as a reward for completion. Currency can also be acquired from other players, with whom you can offer services such as running, grouping or just trading with them.

[edit] Use

Currency is used to buy items from NPC sellers in-game, who provide just about everything: basic needs, armor, weapons, skills, guild services, consumables, scrolls, dyes, runes, common materials, rare materials, and a few lesser services such as storage fees. Since other players also need these things, you can also trade them currency in exchange for something you want, or to do some task for you.

Spending currency on NPC services leads to balancing the game's economy; they are gold sink mechanisms, where currency that entered the game is equally deleted from it, preventing runaway inflation.

[edit] Notes

  • Gold coins dropped by enemies in an explorable area are not assigned; anyone can pick them up, which shares them evenly among the party (including henchmen and heroes, whose share is not added to their owner's).
  • To store currency for a whole account, a player must talk to a Xunlai Agent and pay a one-time charge of 50 Gold to access their vault box.
  • The maximum amount of gold an account can have is 4,500,000 Gold. This is achieved by having 1,000,000 Gold in the vault box and 100,000 Gold on all 35 characters (the maximum amount of characters possible on one account).
