Damage over time
From Guild Wars Wiki
(Redirected from DoT)
Damage over time, or DoT, is a term which means dealing damage not at once but over a given time period. Most damage over time skills deal damage over discrete increments, however others deal damage only when a specific triggering condition is met. The term is also used to refer collectively to both true damage over time effects and health degeneration effects, which are similar, but technically a form of non-damage health loss.
- Examples of discrete increment DoTs include Fire Storm, Balthazar's Aura and Glimmering Mark. Each increment of damage can be mitigated by damage reduction skills such as Shielding Hands. Skills which deal this type of damage are usually AoE skills.
- Examples of triggered DoT include Empathy and Spiteful Spirit.
- Examples of health degeneration include the skill Reaper's Mark and the condition bleeding. Since health degeneration is not considered "damage," it ignores armor and other damage reduction skills.
